The cannabis plant includes a large network of chemical compounds called Cannabinoids, which relieves all sorts of ailments.
Cannabinoids are the secret ingredient that help you feel better, and every cannabis strain has a different cannabinoid composition. You can therefore select certain cannabis strains depending on the type of relief you are looking for. For example, if you're suffering from migraines, you might select a cannabis strain with high levels of the CBD, a cannabinoid known to decrease pain, while if you're combating fatigue, you might select a cannabis strain with higher levels of THC, a cannabinoid known to stimulate energy. The best part of these cannabinoids? There is already a naturally occurring system inside your body that is especially receptive to them: the endocannabinoid system.
The Human Endocannabinoid System
"Endo" means substances or processes that originate in the tissue or cells. So, "Endocannabinoid" refers to the naturally occurring cannabinoid network present in our bodies (think, the brain and the central nervous system) that both creates and receives cannabinoids. and is involved in primary functions and processes that regulate such things as appetite, pain sensation, mood and memory. Fun Fact: some of our furry, four legged friends have an endocannabinoid system too!
While much research is still to be done, three primary receptors have been identified: CB1, CB2 and CBD. Check out the below image to see just how present the endocannabinoid system is inside each of us!
